Equine Vitamin E

vitenew web sml.JPG

A cherry flavoured Vitamin E supplement in a wheatgerm base.  Each 15gm dose contains 1000iu of Vitamin E in the form of Tocopherol.

Vitamin E is a powerful anti-oxidant. It protects muscle cells and blood vessels against the toxic waste products of cell metabolism known as free radicals.  It also protects the red blood cells.

It has been shown that Vitamin E supplementation can reduce nervousness in some horses.  It also is indicated to aid horses that are prone to tying up, especially in conjunction with equine Selenium K.

Horses low in good pasture or green feed intake are in need of Vitamin E supplementation.

Do not add to the same feed as an iron supplement as the Vitamin may be damaged and therefore made ineffective.

Equine Vitamin Supplement

Vitamin web sml.jpg

A cherry flavoured vitamin and amino acid supplement containing all the essential B group vitamins, vitamin A, vitamin C and the essential amino acids lysine and methionine.

The B group vitamins are essential for the efficient conversion of muscular glycogen to ATP.  They are synthesized by the micro-organisms in the large intestine, at levels that generally meet daily requirements.  However when horses are in training, these requirements increase significantly- added to this- the digestion of high grain diets leads to a decrease in B vitamins production due to a fall in the pH in the large intestine.  Consequently supplementation of B group vitamins is necessary for horses in training on high grain diets.

Because of their water solubility, B vitamins cannot be stored in the body therefore supplementation needs to be on a daily basis.  Equine Vitamin Supplement contains all the essential B group vitamins plus Vitamins A and C at levels to meet the daily demands of training.

Vitamin A is not manufactured in the horse so must be available in the diet.  It is necessary for all growth processes, important in reproduction performance, also necessary for anti bodies and resistance to diseases.

Vitamin C plays an important role in the maintenance of a competent immune system and in the formulation of collagen, an important component of cartilage and tendons.

Lysine and methionine are important essential amino acids, the definition essential means they cannot be  synthesized by the body.

Equine Electrolytes

Electrolyte 1,2 & 5kg web sml.jpg

A neutral electrolyte formulation that replaces the electrolytes lost in sweat. In the athletic horse, muscular activity increases body heat.  The only way for horses to get rid of this heat is by sweating.  Sweat takes with it a significant amount of electrolytes, especially chloride and sodium.  It is important for horses to maintain their Dietary Electrolyte Balance (DEB) in order to maintain intra and extra-cellular water volume Muscle contractions are also dependent on optimal electrolyte levels. Daily supplementation with Equine Electrolytes is the most effective way of ensuring the correct DEB.

Daily Dose Rate;  Racehorses 90gm (180mg/kg LWT). Eventers 90gm (180mg/kg LWT), Show & Dressage Horses 60gm (120mg/kg LWT), Horses in Light Work 60gm (120mg/kg LWT)

Equine Relax Calming Formula

Relax 12&3newlabel web sml.jpg

Contains Vitamin B1 and Vitamin E.  Both these vitamins can help nervous horses to settle, as well as being advantageous for muscle problems.

Contains Magnesium.  Some horses may suffer from a lack of available magnesium in their diets.   These horses become hypersensitive, even in their normal stable environment.

Contains the amino acid L-Tryptophan which has a calming effect on horses.  When fed in high doses Tryptophan is converted by the body to a natural sedative.  In humans it has been used to treat insomnia.

Equine Relax can be used right up to and during competition as it contains no prohibited substances.

Daily dose rate is 35gm for ponies and 50gm for horses.  The time a horse takes to respond varies on the type of horse and it's general level of reactions.  For example some reported responses have been 5-7 days, others up to 21 days.  It can be used for a few days prior to a competition at twice the daily dose.

Daily Dose Rate;  Horses (500kg) 50gm (100mg/kg LWT), Ponies (350kg) 35gm (100mg/kg LWT)

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS PER KG;

Equine Four Feet

Four Feet pouchessml

Cracked and brittle hooves are common amongst performance horses.  Poor moisture retention combined with poor hoof growth are the cause of the problem.  Horses end up having difficulty holding a shoe and are predisposed to quarter cracks, seedy toe and foot infections.

Prevention starts with increasing moisture retention followed by promoting hoof growth.  Nutrition affects hoof growth, hoof size is directly influenced by diet. Horses fed an optimum diet have an 80% increase in hoof-sole border size compared to those fed a limited diet. Research has shown that the minerals   zinc, magnesium, calcium and sulphur along with Vitamin A and Biotin are all necessary for the development of a normal hoof. Since horses are often not fed an optimum diet due to availability of good pasture and a correct balance of feed, it is necessary to feed a specifically formulated supplement which ensures that these vital ingredients are in the diet .

Equine Four Feet contains zinc, sulphur, menthionine and biotin, all essential components of strong healthy hooves, in a gelatin and yeast base. Gelatin contains all essential amino acids except tryptophan.

Although difficult to exactly quantify, some research has been able to suggest that for effective improvement of hoof quality an amount of 15 mg per day of Biotin needs to be fed, most grains are very low in Biotin with the exception of maize.  The same dose size provides 9gms of methionine. Methionine is essential in producing cystine. This is present in Keratin which is the protein that the hoof wall is primarily made of.

Hoof improvement is a long term process and supplementation needs to be continued for a minimum of three months on a daily basis.

At the suggested dose rate of 30gms Equine Four Feet provides 15 mg of Biotin and 9gms of methionine, 150 mg Zinc and 900 mg sulphur. All more than most other hoof products (check out the labels).

Available sizes:  500 gm, 1kg

Equine Iron 3

Iron - Frontmed.jpg

Is a total haemolytic supplement.  Horses on grain and hay based diets with limited access to quality grazing can have a shortfall of up to 600mg of iron per day.  Also horses in hard work and stressful conditions or with heavy worm burden or blood loss will be in need of haemolytic supplementation.  Oral iron supplementation is preferable to injectable as it avoids the risk of overdosing and liver damage, as the digestive processes of the horse will control the actual amount of iron absorbed.

Vetpro Equine Iron3 supplement is a caramel flavoured formulation of three important ingredients; Readily absorbable iron, cobalt and copper.

Iron - maintains the horse's iron reserves.  It is necessary in order to maintain the haemoglobin component of blood, which is responsible of carrying oxygen throughout the body.  The ability to carry and deliver oxygen has a direct influence on the energy transfer in the muscles and therefore influences performance in the equine athlete.

Cobalt - assists the formation of B12 which works with folic acid to maintain red blood cell formation.

Copper - Facilitates the absorption of iron and assist in the formation of haemoglobin in red blood cells.

Equine Iron3 - supplement can be mixed with a damp feed or syringed onto the back of the tongue.  Because iron can interfere with absorption of some vitamins, avoid feeding at the same time as a vitamin supplement especially Vitamin E.

Daily Dose Rate;  Horses in training 60ml (0.12mg/kg LWT), Yearlings 40ml (0.12mg/kg LWT), Weanlings 20ml (0.12mg/kg LWT)

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS PER LITRE;

Ferrous Gluconate 5.0%

Copper Sulphate 0.5%

Cobalt Sulphate 0.025%

Available in 1 litre, & 20 Litre sizes.

Equine Selenium K

Selenium-k new pic aug 2011sml

Cellular energy metabolism produces waste products called peroxides. They are significant in the athletic horse because of the huge amounts of energy used by their musculo-skeletal system. Unless the peroxides can be neutralised effectively, muscle damage will occur. One of the most important anti-oxidants in the body, is the selenium containing enzyme, Glutathione Peroxidase. If selenium is lacking in the diet, this enzyme cannot do its job effectively. New Zealand soils are generally low in selenium with over 40% of farmland considered to be deficient. Dietary supplementation is the only way to ensure horses receive their daily requirement.
Selenium is available in either inorganic or chelated forms. The inorganic form, although inexpensive, is poorly absorbed. The chelated form is more efficiently absorbed therefore is better utilised by the horse.
EQUINE SELENIUM K contains chelated Selenium EDTA. Horses should receive a 15gram dose per day which delivers 1.66mg of available selenium. As well as this, the kelp meal base provides over 30 important micro-nutrients such as boron and molybdenum.

Daily Dose Rate;  Adult Horses 15gm (30mg/kg LWT), Ponies 10gm (30mg/kg LWT), Yearlings 10gm (30 mg/kg LWT), Weanlings 5gm (30mg/kg LWT)

Minerals
Grass is never enough

Vetpro has customized the range of Mineral Supplements to make minerals more user- specific.  The under lying principle that we are basing this on is that all horses need mineral supplementation. They are essential for the growth and development of the musculo-skeletal system in young horses. Adult horses rely on minerals for the maintenance of that same system.  There are no grazing situations in New Zealand that can provide the total mineral requirements of a horse on a daily basis.

We can recognize 2 dietary situations where different mineral supplements are necessary.  Which category does your horse fit?

1#        Horses grazing at pasture and fed nothing else.  E.g. spelling horses (maintenance) ponies and broodmares (non-pregnant).  Then you will need Speller Minerals.

2#        Horses fed hard feed and hay with limited access to pasture, and being required to produce strenuous or demanding performance E.g. racehorses, eventers and also late pregnancy and lactating broodmares.  Then you will need  Performance Minerals (See info below)

Everyday Minerals

Everday-Minerals3.png

Formulated to economically provide all the necessary minerals and trace elements needed by sport, leisure, spelling horses and dry broodmares. Even the best pasture cannot provide all the mineral requirements needed by these horses. Vitamins are not needed on a daily basis so why waste $$$ with combination supplements that may not provide the in- depth formulas, but just provide a lesser amount and a lot of unnecessary ingredients. It can be detrimental to the health of a horse to over-supplement certain vitamins. At times B vitamins are required - stress or high exertion can create a drop and then Vetpro Equine Athlete B Boost can be used for an instant replenishment.

Feeding some premix feeds can provide some minerals and trace elements, however, when the label is actually read, it usually requires a horse to be fed a large amount of the feed to achieve an acceptable level of supplements - more than most sport and leisure horses are given.

Everyday Minerals do not contain selenium as this element needs to be very closely monitored and low and high levels can have a very significant effect on the horse, with very high levels proving to be toxic. Selenium supplementation should be carried out when the levels in the horse have been assessed by a blood test.  Vetpro Selenium K is a safe chelated supplement for correcting low levels in the horse.

Everyday Minerals have a calcium phosphorus ratio of 2.5 : 1 and this is vital to maintain the imbalance in this ratio that can occur with low lucerne or high fat feeds. Although increasing lucerne levels may assist in improving the ratio, it will increase the protein percentage which can produce other problems for the horse. The answer is a correctly formulated mineral supplement –  Vetpro Everyday Minerals will do just that.

For horses in more work, such as racing, competition horses, lactating and late trimester brood mares, Vetpro High Performance Minerals should be given on a daily basis.

Vetpro produces carefully formulated supplements for a purpose, allowing the owner to put together exactly their horses’ individual needs, therefore being both more effective and economic than the scattergun approach.
Equine High Performance Minerals

Performance Mins web sml.jpg

Horses in full training on high energy diets have an extra demand for minerals and trace elements.  The same can be said for lactating broodmares and rapidly growing yearlings (pre-sale preparation).  If feeding prepared feeds with some minerals included - check the list of actual minerals and note that unless the horse is fed the stated quantity eg, 5kgs per day then the mineral content will be less than the required daily amount.  Vetpro Equine Performance Minerals contain calcium and phosphorus in approximately a 1:1 ratio, along with higher levels of all the essential trace minerals.  Used at the recommended dose rated it provides the daily requirements of all important minerals and trace elements.

We recommend this formulation for all racehorses, polo ponies, eventers, pre-sale yearlings and late pregnancy and lactating broodmares.

Equine Foalmilk

Foal Milk Powder web sml.jpg

Mare’s milk is unique - foals do not thrive on cow’s milk. To use cow’or goat milk as a replacement can cause difficulties for the orphan foal, reducing their chances of  healthy development.
Vetpro Foalmilk does not contain colostrum - this must be given to the foal within four hours of birth and prior to any other nutrients, even milk or water.
Vetpro Foalmilk is made from premium quality (human consumable standard) New Zealand milk powder.  It is also combined with the correct balance of fats, lactose and sugar, with the vitamins and minerals at an optimum level for the healthy development of the foal. This produces the closest formulation to mare’s milk than either cow or goat milk.

Comparison of main ingredients:
